Epsom Salt is a great source of Magnesium that is essential to plant development. It is required by plants to produce chlorophyll. One symptom of leaf yellowing is a magnesium deficiency. Epsom Salts also help plants absorb phosphorus, increases a plant’s natural resistance to disease and can be absorbed by both the leaves and roots.

APPLICATION DIRECTIONS: Foliar – Apply 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) per 1 – 2 gallons of water. This will cover 500 – 1000 square feet. Apply 2 – 4 applications throughout the growing season. Soil (Roses & Shrubs) – Apply 1/4 cup to the base of the plant early in the spring when new growth begins. A followup summer application may also be made.

Bokashi is an incredibly useful and under-utilized soil amendment that has a multitude of uses in the garden as well as in the chicken coop, compost pile or residential kitchen compost bin. While it does not provide fertility in the traditional sense of an N-P-K fertilizer, it does make nutrients available to plants while improving soil health and structure. You can think of it like an inoculant for your soil, similar to how you would inoculate bread dough or beer wort with yeast.

The large populations of various Lactic acid bacteria also make Bokashi an incredibly useful addition to any place where nitrogenous odors, (chicken poop, rotting veggie scraps, etc.) are present. The Lactic acid bacteria promotes the breakdown and fermentation of organic material and cuts down on the odors that compost bins with too much nitrogen-rich material are known for.

Southern Oregon Bokashi is composed of  symbiotic microorganisms (Lactic Acid Bacteria, Yeasts, and Photosynthetic Bacteria) grown onto a grain substrate that when utilized has been shown to:

• Breakdown nutrients from the soil therefore making the nutrients more available to plants
• Reduce the amount of fertilizer needed to achieve healthy productive plants
• Increase microbial activity in soil and, as a foliar spray, on leaves
• Improve soil structure by creating aggregates and increasing water holding capacity, therefore, reducing runoff and soil erosion
• Increase photosynthetic capacity of plants
• Suppress soil borne disease and pests
• Improve plant growth and fosters the formation of larger flowering sets
• Dramatically speed up composting of manures and organic waste

1) Photosynthetic Bacteria (Rhodopseudomonas palustris)

The photosynthetic or phototropic bacteria are a group of independent, self supporting microbes. These bacteria synthesize useful substances from secretions of roots, organic matter and/or harmful gases (eg. hydrogen sulphide), by using sunlight and the heat of soil as sources of energy. Useful substances developed by these microbes include amino acids, nucleic acids, bioactive substances and sugars, all of which promote plant growth and development. The metabolites developed by these microorganisms are absorbed directly into plants and act as substrates for increasing beneficial populations.  R. palustris in particular has been acknowledged by microbiologists to be one of the most metabolically versatile bacteria ever described with the ability to utilize four distinct trophic feeding elements.

2) Lactic acid bacteria ( Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus delbrueckii)

Lactic acid bacteria produce lactic acid from sugars and other carbohydrates, developed by photosynthetic bacteria and yeast. Therefore, some foods and drinks such as yogurt and pickles have been made with lactic acid bacteria for decades. However, lactic acid is a strong sterilizing compound, and suppresses harmful microorganisms and enhances decomposition of organic matter. Moreover, lactic acid bacteria promote the decomposition of material such as lignin and cellulose and ferments these materials, thereby removing undesirable effects of non-decomposed organic matter. Lactic acid bacteria have the ability to suppress disease-inducing microorganisms such as Fusarium, which occur in continuous cropping programs. Under normal circumstances, species such as Fusarium weaken crop plants, thereby exposing plants to diseases and increased pest populations such as root-feeding nematodes. The use of lactic acid bacteria reduces root-feeding nematode populations and controls propagation and spread of Fusarium, thereby inducing a better environment for crop growth.

3) Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae)

Yeasts synthesis antimicrobial and other useful substances required for plant growth from amino acids and sugars secreted by photosynthetic bacteria, organic matter and plant roots. The bio-active substances such as hormones and enzymes produced by yeasts promote active cell and root division. These secretions are also useful substrates for microorganisms such as lactic acid bacteria and actinomycetes.  When yeast lyse occurs they release the complete B vitamins into the soils aiding in recovery of plants from stresses.

4) Bacilli (Bacillus subtilis)

Bacillus work in the soil by forming bio-films composed of a multitude of microorganisms.  These tend to be formed at the interface between the air and water and interacts with the plant’s root system.  These bio-films are beneficial because for many reasons.  Bio-films are typically formed through the microbes use of quorum sensing.  Beneficial microorganisms are able to inhibit pathogenic microorganisms to gain dominance in the bio-films.  This ability aids in the control of pathogenic infections of plants.  Many of the Bacillus microbes can degrade polymers such as protein, starch, and pectin, therefore, they are considered to be an important contributor to the carbon and nitrogen cycles. When the nutrient availability falls too low for Bacillus subtilis they will form endospores and hibernate until conditions return to more optimum levels.  Bacillus subtilis has been found useful in foliar application to combat primary stages of powdery mildew infestation.

Down To Earth Bat Guano 7-3-1 is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potash and provides essential plant nutrition for vigorous vegetative growth and prolific fruit and flower development. DTE Bat Guano 7-3-1 is highly effective mixed into soils, applied as a side dress or steeped to make a potent guano tea or foliar spray.

Application Rate for Bat Guano.

8 cups ≈ 1 lb; 1 cup ≈ 2 oz; 1 tbsp ≈ 0.1 oz

Vegetable Gardens & Flower Beds:

For smaller gardens, apply 1-2 tbsp. per square foot and thoroughly mix into the top 3″ of garden soil. For larger gardens, apply 1-2 lbs. per 100 square feet and thoroughly mix into soil. For transplants, add 1-2 tsp. per hole, mix with soil and water in well.  To feed established plants, side dress 1-2 tsp., depending on size of plant and desired growth rate, once each month during the growing season

Outdoor Containers:

For new plantings, add 1-2 tsp. per gallon of soil and mix thoroughly or add 2.5-5 lbs per cubic yard. To feed established plants, lightly mix 1 tsp. per gallon into the soil surface once each month during the growing season.

Liquid Preparations:

Add 1-2 tbsp. bat guano per gallon of water and let steep for up to 48 hours. Water plants as needed or filter and apply as a foliar spray. Be sure to use all of the guano liquid once it is prepared.

Down To Earth Fish Bone Meal 4-12-0 is a marine-based alternative to traditional steamed bone meal and is a great source of organic phosphorus and calcium.

As one of the three macro-nutrients for plants, phosphorous plays a role in both root and bloom development, which helps produce high-quality fruit and flowers. Phosphorus helps plants take to new soil by boosting root development. Strong root development means plants will grow faster and be healthier because they can absorb more water and nutrients from the soil. You will have larger carrots and potatoes, and flowers will produce bigger blossoms.

DTE Fish Bone Meal 4-12-0 also contains a small amount of organic nitrogen and is an ideal fertilizer for new garden beds, perennials and bulbs.

Application Rates for Fish Bone Meal

2 cups ≈ 1 lb; ½ cup ≈ 4 oz; 1 tbsp ≈ 0.5 oz

Bulbs:

Add 1 tbsp per hole for average size bulbs, more for larger varieties. Mix thoroughly into soil and water in well.

Row Crops/Acreage:

Apply 500-1,000 lbs per acre depending on specific crop needs or required pounds of actual nitrogen per acre.
