The Bloodthorn Rose lives up to its name with seductively translucent thorns that really light up in a Femme Fatale kind of way when the late afternoon sun shines through them like stained glass! Cut back annually to maintain the young growth that features the beautiful red thorns, otherwise they fade to brown but produce very nice, single white flowers on second years wood that are quite fragrant.

Bloodthorn Rose

We typically steer clear of ornamental roses as there’s quite enough of them already here in the beautiful City of Roses, but this one we couldn’t resist. The Bloodthorn Rose lives up to its name with seductively translucent thorns that really light up in a Femme Fatale kind of way when the late afternoon sun shines through them like stained glass! Cut back annually to maintain the young growth that features the beautiful red thorns, otherwise they fade to brown but produce very nice, single white flowers on second years wood that are quite fragrant.

Latin Name: Rosa pteracantha
Site and Soil: Bloodthorn Rose likes full to 1/2 day sun and is happy in most soils
Pollination Requirements: Self-fertile.
Hardiness: Hardy to minus 20°F. or below.
Bearing Age: 1-2 years after planting.
Size at Maturity: about 8 ft. in height and as wide if left unpruned
Bloom Time: Spring to fall
Ripening Time: Fall
Pests & Diseases: Not bothered by pests or diseases.
USDA Zone: 5
