Here are a few tips for Hot Weather Planting to give your plants the best chance to thrive in the summer or during those hot spring and fall days.

1) When they arrive, soak bare roots in a bucket of water in a shady outdoor area.  Let them soak for at least an hour, or overnight, to recover from shipment stress.

2) If possible, wait for an overcast day to plant.  (However, better to get them in the ground than wait for a week.  You can cover their roots with a moist potting soil if you are anticipating a cloudy day soon).

3) For the first two weeks: give a deep watering every morning.  Then you can scale back to watering every other day, then eventually every three days.  Be sure to give a deep watering, i.e. one gallon per tree.  Morning and evening watering is ideal, as more water is lost to evapotranspiration in the afternoons.

4) If you have shade cloth or some other way to minimize the exposure of the tree for the first few weeks after planting, this is an added bonus.

5) Lastly, do not over-amend your soil.  Mixing in a small amount of compost is beneficial, but adding too much organic matter can cause water drainage issues and can cause additional heat to build up around the roots.  The most important factors when digging your hole are to break up the surrounding soil, and don’t plant the tree too deep.

All said, most trees are able to get established as long as they get watered!

Spring shipping 2017 begins Feb 20th. As with all farming we are at the mercy of the weather and the winter of 2016-17 has been challenging. We have seen 2 feet of snow in the nursery and over 1 inch of ice. Greenhouse snow load capacity were tested (no damage thankfully) and temperatures dipped into the teens. Despite all these challenges we have pushed forward. Unfortunately due to the snow and ice persisting for several weeks we have experienced a 2-3 week delay in digging the trees out of the ground.

Therefore Spring Shipping 2017 begins Feb 20th this year. Customers who have provided emails with their order will receive a tracking number for the package. Local pick ups will also be available at the same time. Orders will be shipped in the order that they were received. We ship to Zones 9,8,7 first due to the weather then followed by zones 6 then 5 etc. If you are zone 5-4 please expect your shipment around the first week of April.

We are working to improve communications regarding shipping this year and so in addition to receiving tracking information once the package is shipped we will be sending email notifications when your order is being prepped for delivery a week or so before it goes out to give you time to prep your yard or make any last minute adjustments.

You can always refer to our Shipping page for the most up to date information. Thanks and let us know if you have any questions.
