Red Candy Lingonberry

An especially attractive and improved variety from Europe, Red Candy is early flowering, compact, and produces large yields of berries that hang on the shrub for a very long time. While you can eat it straight from the bush, it is more popular in pies, jams and other tasty treats.

Lingonberries are close relatives to the blueberry and cranberry. The plants are native in some areas of North America, and are most abundantly found in the Scandinavian countries of Europe. The small red fruits are known to be very high in anti-oxidants with documented research that shows fruits contain an extreme abundance of nutrients. The fruits have a fresh aroma and the flavor is mostly tart with a slight sweetness. Fruits have a firm skin and can be stored for several month at cold temperatures.

Latin Name: Vaccinium vitis-idea
Site and Soil: 1/2 day to full with filtered shade in hot region and moist acidic, well-drained soil
Pollination Requirements: Self-fertile but plant with Red Pearl or any other Lingonberry for cross pollination and better crops.
Hardiness: Hardy to -45° F.
Bearing Age: Our plants are of bearing age at time of sale 
Size at Maturity: 12″ tall and spreading, forms a great ground-cover

Our new favorite groundcover! We first saw Alpine Mint Bush at the University of Washington Arboretum and it was love at first sight! Growing to only a foot or two high by about 3 or 4 feet wide, the Alpine Mint Bush has all the amazing qualities of its close relative the Australian Mint Bush in a low growing and much more cold hardy form! White flowers make a lovely carpet in late spring and attracts bees to your orchard or garden. Evergreen, fragrant and cute as a boot!

Latin Name: Prostanthera cuneata
Site and Soil: In cold climates keep in Alpine Mint Bush  in a location with 1/2 day to full sun. In the winter, place your plant in a well-lit room. Potting soil should be coarse and well-drained.
Hardiness: Hardy to at least 0 degrees Fahrenheit and reliably hardy around the Northwest
Size at Maturity: 2 feet in height by 3 feet wide

Pt. Reyes Ceanothus

Pt. Reyes Ceanothus is easily the most widely planted Ceanothus ground cover, and for good reason! This beautiful evergreen is as tough as they come, excels in hot dry situations, on slopes, and delights the bees when the plant gets absolutely covered in violet blue flowers each March. Stems root as they touch the ground making it a valuable erosion control ground cover. And it fixes nitrogen too! Perfect for the parking strip.

A very useful and beautiful genus of shrubs native to the West Coast, mostly in the California and Southern Oregon Coast Range, Ceanothus boast evergreen foliage, gorgeous purple to blue, sometimes white, flowers and can tolerate the worst soil conditions so long as they are well draining. As nitrogen fixing shrubs they also fix nitrogen in the soil and are excellent companion plants for other woody plants.

Koralle Lingonberry

Koralle Lingonberry was developed in Germany and first released in Holland. It’s small, glossy, evergreen leaves take on a mahogany hue during the winter months. Near white to pink flowers bloom spring to fall, followed by bright red, edible berries. Originally developed as an ornamental ground cover, then later cultivated for it’s fruit. Now a popular Dutch cultivar making up almost all of European Production. Koralle Lingonberry is a super-hardy and very popular in Scandinavia and Northern Europe. Tart tasty lingonberries can be eaten fresh and really excel in preserves, jams, jellies, syrup and wine. It is also resistant to deer and rabbits, making it an excellent choice for use in borders, mixed containers, or as ground-cover.
