Burbank Chilean Guava

An old selection from the famous and prolific plant breeder Luther Burbank. His namesake Chilean Guava was selected for its larger, sweeter berries and prolific crops. Still an excellent variety for the home garden and it’s fun to have a little piece of horticultural history growing in your backyard.

A very attractive shrub, Chilean Guava produces profuse, fragrant, small white flowers followed by pretty red berries. Sweet with a sprightly, Guava-like flavor and fragrance. Fruit are delicious for fresh eating and for making jams and jellies. Makes a nice container plant and can be brought inside when severe cold threatens.

Site and Soil: Guava likes 1/2 day to full sun in cooler regions, partial shade in hot regions, and well-drained, acidic soil.

Finnberry Raspberry

Finnberry is a primocane, or fall bearing, raspberry. A cultivar named for a legend in his field.

Raspberry plants can fruit on different types of canes, and these are categorized into primocane and floricane. Both primocane (first year) fruiting and floricane (second year) fruiting raspberries have both primocanes and floricanes growing from the plant after the first year. Floricane fruiting varieties have primocanes that grow throughout the first year and do not produce fruit. Primocane fruiting varieties have primocanes that produce flowers and fruit the first year, and then the remaining cane will overwinter and fruit again the second year. Pruning needs differ for these types of plants to be productive.

Primocane:
Primocane fruiting raspberries, commonly called Everbearing raspberries, produce flowers and fruit on first year canes. Primocane varieties will produce a moderate crop in June and a much larger crop from late August until frost. Primocane varieties can be mowed to the ground after harvest and require less trellising than June bearing varieties.

Floricane:
Floricane fruiting raspberries, or June-bearing, produce flowers and fruit on second year canes. Their fruit ripens in June or July, depending on the location and conditions. These varieties will require a permanent trellis or support to grow on.

Another excellent honeyberry introduction from the University of Saskatchewan, Boreal Blizzard produces some of the largest honeyberries of any cultivar and ripens later than most varieties. It has good resistance to powdery mildew and the berries have an excellent flavor.

Site and Soil: Moderately fertile, well-drained soil with full to partial sun.
Pollination Requirements: Two varieties with similar bloom time are needed for cross-pollination.
Hardiness: Hardy to minus 40º F.
Bearing Age: 2-3 years after planting.
Size at Maturity: 3-5 ft. in height and 3-5 ft. in width
Taste: Sweet-tart, blueberry-like flavor
Fruit Skin: Blue
Fruit Size: Large
Bloom Time: March-April
Ripening Time: May-June
Pests & Diseases:  To deter birds, use mylar flash tape or cover plants with netting. Powdery mildew is common fungal disease that affects Honeyberry plants, but doesn’t cause significant damage.
