Our native Northwest crabapple is an easy to grow shrub or small tree with white flowers and small crabapples that are mostly enjoyed by wildlife. Tolerates a wide range of soils and has been used as a rootstock in areas that would be too wet for more traditional apple rootstocks.

Native to the forest understory throughout the western Cascade Mountains, Creeping Oregon Grape forms a low sprawling shrub that stays about 2 feet tall or lower and produces an abundance of bright yellow flowers in spring followed by deep purple Mahonia berries or Oregon grapes as they’re sometimes called in late summer into fall. A great low maintenance ground cover for shade and a good plant to support wildlife.

Evergreen Huckleberry (1 gallon container)

Growing throughout our Northwest coastal forests, this very attractive, upright growing shrub, Evergreen Huckleberry is prized for its deep green, evergreen foliage and flavorful, juicy, dark blue fruit, which is great for fresh eating and makes delicious preserves and Huckleberry pies. Likes shade or sun and moist, well-drained, acidic soil. It will grow to 8 ft. in height in the shade and 3-4 ft. in height in the sun. Space 2-3 ft. apart to make a beautiful, edible, evergreen hedge. Works well planted amongst Salal for a gorgeous Northwest Native edible landscape.

The deer fern is one of our favorite Pacific Northwest Natives. With is beautiful elegant evergreen foliage and strikingly textured fertile fronds it is an easy, low maintenance fern to throw in the shade garden for added texture. Deer Ferns grow all along the west coast from Alaska down to Northern California and prefer some shade, acidic soil and soils high in organic matter though they are adaptable to many different soils types and solar aspects to an extent. Deer fern deserves to be more widely planted in our cultivated landscapes!

The Northern Maidenhair Fern, a northeast native fern, is one of the most stunning of any fern species you’ll ever come across. An elegant crown of feathery leaves is held a foot or so above the ground on slender bluish black stems and as the cool summer breeze causes the foliage to wave in the wind it is easy to see why this fern was named maidenhair. A truly stunning addition to the shade garden. Plant in cool, moist soil in shade to part shade. Plants will grow 1.5 to 2 feet tall and form a slowly spreading clump via underground rhizomes.

Coast Silk Tassel Bush

The Coast Silk Tassel is a very ornamental and underused native shrub that inhabits coastal areas of Southern Oregon and Northern California. Though it prefers the cool, misty conditions of the coast it also performs remarkably well here in Portland and around the Northwest if given a bit of afternoon shade and some supplemental water.  Makes an excellent hedge and is a silvery silky hedge of wonderment when in bloom!
